Abuja, Lagos protesters resist N160m SUV for lawmakers

Protests broke out in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Monday as youths decried the allocation of Sport Utility Vehicles for members of the National Assembly. The youths who gathered in their numbers in the Ikeja area of Lagos held placards and chanted ‘Fund education not SUVs, ‘Pay living wage not SUVs, ‘Return the SUVs Now’ and ‘Fund hospitals, not SUVs,’ among others. According to the protesters, “Lawmakers buying SUVs with public funds is insensitive when the majority are suffering.” One of the protesters, Juwon Sanyaolu told Newsmen that “Workers are still battling for a living wage as the N33,000 minimum wage is not sustainable but we have people at NASS taking delivery of exotic vehicles with about N160bn. President Bola Tinubu has suspended the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Bawa indefinitely. This follows weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him. Bawa has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation.

The Supreme Court, has affirmed the eligibility of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to contest the presidential election that held on February 25. The apex court, in a unanimous decision by a five-member panel, on Friday, held that an appeal the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, filed to challenge the legality of Tinubu’s candidacy, lacked merit. PDP had in the appeal marked: SC/CV/501/2023, sought Tinubu’s disqualification on the premise that the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima, allowed himself to be nominated for more than one constituency, ahead of the 2023 general elections.
